Animus Association was founded by women professionals – psychologists, psychotherapists and social workers in 1994.

Their work focuses on protection and support for all survivors of violence including their relatives and witnesses, especially women and children.

Animus has three main pillars of work:

  • Direct work with children who have experienced gender, sexual or family violence: counselling and psychotherapeutic programmes for children and adolescents, including a specialised trauma support centre for children and families experiencing domestic violence; a crisis centre; legal centre for victims of domestic violence, work with children who have been trafficked; providing a mother and baby home and work in schools on violence in schools. Work with both children and adults who are perpetrators of violence.
  • Training: Animus trains a broad range of professionals including social workers and psychologists from other organisations or communities, law enforcement, court clerks, prosecutors.
  • Prevention and Advocacy: Prevention of child abandonment, and reintegration of children placed in institutions; support to children who are about to be adopted or re-integrated in their biological families; support for mental health services in schools.

Animus undertakes individual advocacy and impacts national policy through national commissions and working groups.
