Every child has the right to an identity.

Learn about our campaign to protect the identity rights of children on the move.

15th - 21st of June 2026

The Children on the Move campaign is back in 2026! With six of our member organisations, we are shining a spotlight on the wide range of identity rights violations faced by children on the move around the world. We are going up against barriers to birth registration, we are calling for every child’s right to an identity to be honoured, and for every child to have access to family relations. Find out more below.

What is the issue?

When children are deprived of their right to identity, they risk violations of other rights, including vital access to education, health care and family relations. All of these are fundamental for their protection, development and wellbeing.

Children on the move are often faced with unique risks, through barriers to birth registration or family separation. For many children, this results in a loss of cultural identity.

What are we doing about it?

Our campaign has been developed by Family for Every Child’s network of locally-led member organisations, who are collectively calling for policies and practices that ensure every child on the move can access and claim their right to identity. These calls include:

  • All states should do more to promote, protect and respect the right of every child to identity, without discrimination
  • All barriers to birth registration must be removed
  • Children on the move must be supported to retain their family connections and cultural identity

Supporting Integration: A Toolkit for Practitioners

Available online, in seven different languages

The Supporting Integration Toolkit is a practical resource developed by members of Family for Every Child for practitioners, policymakers and service providers working with children and young people on the move. Developed through international collaboration, it shares good practice, tools and resources to strengthen care, protection and integration, helping children access equitable support and thrive in their new communities.

Seen, Counted and Protected: A Six-Part Blog Series

This series draws on the webinar Seen, Counted and Protected convened by Family for Every Child as part of the Children on the Move 2026 campaign. Six civil society organisations working across Guatemala, Mexico, Nepal, Greece, the UK, and Colombia came together to share what identity rights look like in practice for children on the move. Each post in this series focuses on one organisation and one dimension of the problem.

In the United Kingdom, Children and Families Across Borders (CFAB)  is working to ensure its ‘Equity in Permanency’ principles, which prioritise the exploration of family placements for children on the move, are adopted by governments and local authorities.

Colombia

In Colombia, Taller de Vida is running programmes that support displaced indigenous communities in maintaining and restoring cultural knowledge and practices.

Mexico

In Mexico, JUCONI is collaborating with authorities to facilitate access to birth registration for at least 500 children, adolescents and families in communities experiencing underregistration of births
