We want to make institutional care a last resort for children in Indonesia who cannot remain with their own families”
The inter-agency group, which first came together in early 2104 to strategise on child care reform, launched the new organisation at the end of a two-day meeting held at Bogor, in October.
The Family Base Care Alliance is the next step in the group’s work to achieve both new legislation related to care and protection and a change in social attitudes within the country.
Ibnu Tsani, the Secretary of Social Services Council of Central Board Muhammadiyah, said: “We originally convened this group in an effort to mobilize civil society around the issue of children without adequate care.
“We want to make institutional care a last resort for children in Indonesia who cannot remain with their own families – for this we need both the backing of the government and society in general.”
The alliance will now conduct an analysis of family-based and institutional care, including stakeholder interviews, before seeking to open a dialogue with ministers on the issue plus family-based care, guardianship and adoption. This will be complimented by public awareness campaigns.
