Our Story

In 2009, the nonprofit EveryChild recognised that traditional models of international aid, which are often centralised and top-down, were no longer serving those they were set up to help. Local organisations were missing out on funding, not able to access support and recognition was going to international nonprofits that often didn’t fully understand the needs of vulnerable communities. The worldview needed to shift – rather than dividing the global north and south, a multipolar perspective was essential, international collaboration was more important than international development, and local expertise needed to be recognised. So, a bold transition took place. Rather than continuing as a single organisation, EveryChild made a radical decision: to step aside and create something new.

Over the next seven years, we collaborated closely with local organisations across the globe to co-design a global alliance rooted in local leadership. In 2016, Family for Every Child was launched. Today, we are a diverse and growing network of grassroots civil society organisations working in over 40 countries.

Each member remains independent, but together we conduct internationally recognised research, we share our knowledge, co-create solutions and amplify each other’s voices on the global stage. We do all of this in the name of our shared goal: to ensure more children grow up safe, nurtured and surrounded by the love of family and a safe community

Our alliance model shifts power. It centers lived experience, cultural understanding, and local innovation, ensuring that solutions are sustainable, truly child-focused and relevant.

In 2022, Family For Every Child was joined by VOYCE Whakarongo Mai.

VOYCE – Whakarongo Mai stands for Voices of the Young and Care Experienced – Listen to Me. They are a leading organisation created with care experienced young people, to advocate for care experienced young people – those in foster, whānau or kinship care. From there grew a local collective of organisations who have joined together to work for an Aotearoa that honours every child’s right to the love of family and a safe community.

Rather than delivering services to communities, we support and back the people and systems within them – those, who are already leading the change.

Family for Every Child is more than a network; we are a movement led by those who are closest to the challenges.

We work together for a world where every child can grow up in a safe and loving family.
