Community care and social justice

The Association for Community Development (ACD) work to establish the rights of women and children in Bangladesh by promoting social justice and developing community-care support mechanisms.

Their work includes programming that helps to holistically address issues of trafficking, sexual abuse and exploitation; violence against women and children; harmful gender norms; and toxic masculinity. ACD also offer support to rehabilitate and integrate children living on the street, or who are the victims of violence, and provide integrated services to children outside of adult care, including access to social, legal and health services. ACD currently operate across 19 districts in North-western Bangladesh.

ACD’s programming helps to create safer, stronger families, as well as support systems for children in vulnerable situations. As a pioneering organisation established in 1989, ACD contributes significant expertise to the Family Alliance across gender equality, social justice, children’s rights and sustainable development.

Approach

ACD takes a rights-based and sustainability approach to their work.

Programmes are implemented with a view to uplift and empower communities both economically and socially, with the organisation’s ultimate goal being to achieve equal rights for all people. Their strong community-based approach helps to strengthen capacity and mobilisation at the grassroots level, while ACD simultaneously work to further advocacy on key issues and hold local government to account.
