This was a key opportunity to improve support for kinship carers and whānau across Aotearoa. 

Our research has shown us that a lot of the time, kinship carers, childcare’s hidden heroes aren’t seen. This means too many children are not receiving the care they need to thrive and live a good life.

Together with the Children’s Rights Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, VOYCE Whakarongo Mai and FERNZ (Foundation of Equity and Research NZ), we made a submission to help shape this pivotal strategy.

What we’re calling for

We are calling for fair and equitable recognition and support for all carers, including informal kinship and whānau carers so no child misses out on the support they need. We’ve also pushed for stronger inclusion of children’s voices, greater commitment to kaupapa Māori approaches, and clear, measurable action from government.
